Waste to Energy Plant – The Energy Transformation of MSW into RDF/SRF

In the waste-to-energy chain, the conversion of municipal solid waste (MSW) into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and solid recovered fuel (SRF) is a delicate process of "energy alchemy." This specialized processing system, with its unique process design, transforms once-complex municipal waste into standardized fuels, creating a highly efficient path for energy recovery.

In traditional MSW processing, a large amount of combustible material is difficult to directly utilize due to its contamination with water and inert materials. The advent of the RDF/SRF conversion system has revolutionized this situation. The entire process is like a precisely operated "fuel production line." The first step is rigorous pretreatment: a vibrating screen separates non-combustible components such as masonry and metal, and a magnetic separator removes ferromagnetic materials to ensure the purity of the subsequent raw materials. At this point, the waste has shed its "complex outer layer," leaving behind its "core" of combustible materials such as plastic, paper, and wood. In the crushing stage, a specialized shredder shears the material into uniform fragments, keeping the particle size between 5 and 10 cm—a critical parameter for ensuring combustion efficiency. A drying system then utilizes steam generated by a waste heat boiler to reduce the material's moisture content to below 10%, effectively "dehydrating and shaping" the fuel, resulting in a stable calorific value of 15-20 MJ/kg, approaching the energy density of high-quality coal. Finally, after screening and forming, the processed material is compressed into regular particles, becoming RDF/SRF fuel ready for direct boiler use.

The ingenuity of this system lies in converting dispersed energy potential into a controllable energy carrier. At a waste treatment plant in Japan, 800 tons of MSW are converted into RDF daily through this process, not only meeting the plant's own energy needs but also providing heating for 2,000 surrounding households. More importantly, compared to direct incineration, standardized RDF/SRF treatment significantly reduces dioxin emissions and increases the harmful substance removal rate to over 99%. When municipal waste enters the fuel systems of power plants and cement plants in the form of RDF/SRF, we see not only a reduction in waste but also a green transformation of our energy mix. This conversion system uses technological wisdom to bridge the gap between "waste" and "energy," transforming the "waste" generated by urban metabolism into true "nutrients" for sustainable development, making a significant contribution to the circular economy.

The process flow of municipal solid waste sorting equipment is as follows:
